Guys. It’s November.
You’re growing a moustache? That’s cute.
I’m writing a fifty-thousand word novel. In thirty days.
I just gave a little impromptu pep talk on the Australian Muggles Alliance off-topic facebook page, and thought I’d share it here as well. Partially because I haven’t blogged in… too long. Uni’s almost over. I’ll love you then.
Second, remember – IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE GOOD. This is a first draft. Get your ideas on the screen, and do what you please in December. If you find that you keep deleting stuff, STOP IT. You have a few options there. C…hange the font colour to white on what you owant to delete. You can’t see it, but your word count can. Or, add more words, explaining you don’t actually mean for that to be there. F’rinstance: “The cup of tea smelled delicious. Actually, no, it didn’t smell “delicious”, I would actually say it smelled more like sitting in a garden in the middle of spring; fresh and fragrant.” (I’m drinking rose and french vanilla tea :P)
Third, if you’re getting behind, set yourself a short-term goal, and try acheive that for today. In fact, if you aim to write 200 words now, and then maybe another 200 words later, then that feels a whole lot more acheivable than 400 RIGHT NOW, doesn’t it? You will have good days and you will have bad days, and at the end of November, it doesn’t matter if you’ve hit the target for each day, well, EACH DAY. Or if you don’t even get to 50k at all! Take it from someone who’s won, and someone who’s given up and failed; competing AT ALL is where the fun is.
